| Why would I want to start a list? |

The decision to start a mailing list should be motivated by what you are trying to
accomplish. And you should check the Internet to make sure that someone hasn't
already started a mailing list that covers the same topic. It's all too common
that people start a mailing list and wonder why no one is subscribing to the list,
only to find out that there are already three lists on the same topic, all of which
are in full force and going strong.
Obviously, if you are starting a customer newsletter for your company or
organization, then one would hope that there isn't a duplicate already on the
Internet somewhere. :-)
If you've checked and determined that no list already exists for the topic that
you are considering, then it might be a good time to start a new mailing list.
You should also consider how big your potential subscriber base might be. For
instance, if you start a list for people who own red 1999 VW Beetles, then just
be aware that you might only get a handful of subscribers. On the other hand, if
you expanded your list idea to include all VW Beetle owners everywhere, then naturally
you would expect your potential subscriber base to be fairly big. And yes, there are
already several mailing lists for VW Beetle owners, so please don't start another.
The main question you have to ask yourself is "would other people find this list
interesting?". If you think the answer is "Yes", then by all means, start a new
list. If you think you might be the only one who would find that list interesting,
then you might want to reconsider the topic area.
