Electronic mailing lists are one of the most effective and useful ways for
Internet users to collaborate, share information and communicate. Mailing
lists have been a part of the Internet since its founding days and have
proven themselves as one of the best ways to communicate.
A mailing list is a mechanism by which a group of subscribers receives messages
from other subscribers. This could be for group collaboration, sharing a common
hobby, distributing a company newsletter or even just announcing the birth of a
new family member. Mailing lists are about as diverse as you want, yet as
powerful as you need them to be.
For example, technical mailing lists are traditionally quite active, and have
hundreds or thousands of subscribers. It would be fairly common for those
mailing lists to send out hundreds of messages per day. The subscribers to those
lists share a lot of information with each other, and the information comes directly
to their mailbox every time.
A company newsletter mailing list might have thousands of subscribers as well,
but may only send out one message every week or month. The list may be an
"announce only" type of list, where the customers cannot respond to the list.
Other mailing lists are "moderated", meaning that the owner of the mailing list
must read and approve each message before it is resent to the list. These types
of lists tend to have much higher quality messages, since each message is reviewed
ahead of time.
What you use your mailing list for is up to you. We simply provide the software
and hardware that enable you to create your list and use it. The rest is up to you.
