| Can I use my own domain name? |

Generally, mailing lists hosted at Fat City originate from the fatcity.com domain. That
is, if you start a list for orchid lovers called ORCHIDS-L, the actual address of the list is
ORCHIDS-L@fatcity.com
and all messages are sent to and from that address. For 99% of our customers, this is
perfectly fine, causes no problems, and is in fact the desired result.
However, some customers want their mailing list to originate from their own domain.
So the orchid lovers list address might be
ORCHIDS-L@mysite.com
If that is the case, there are two ways to
accomplish this result.
In the first method, we would need to provide all of your E-mail hosting services. You
could still have your website hosted elsewhere (although naturally, we'd love for you
to be hosted with us), but all of your E-mail services would come through fatcity.com.
If you pick up your E-mail via POP3, or use a forwarding service, for example, you would continue to do that, but
just pick it up from our servers via POP3 or forward it from here instead. Once we can administer your E-mail flow,
then you can have a list set up and have it originate from your domain as shown above.
As an alternative, for those who already have existing E-mail services that are either
too complex to change over, or just inconvenient, we can attach our list server to a
subdomain of your main domain. In this case, your list would appear to be:
ORCHIDS-L@lists.mysite.com
In order to accomplish this,
you must have the ability to create a new domain name record. If you are managing
your own domains, this won't be a problem. As most people do not manage their own domains,
but rely on an upstream provider, this requires that they create a domain name entry
for your site of the form "lists.mysite.com" which points to our list server.
Your ISP may do this for free, but they may charge you a monthly fee (although most don't).
Once the new domain record is created,
you can direct E-mail traffic to and from that specific address, and your
list subscribers will believe that the messages originate from your domain. This is actually
not true, however, since the messages will originate from our system, but will just have
your domain name in the address.
For either of these last two situations, please contact us and we can discuss your
specific needs and give you the procedures that need to be accomplished before your list
can be setup. Depending on how fast the changes can be made, your list set up may
require additional time to complete.
