Electronic mailing lists are one of the most effective and useful ways for
Internet users to collaborate, share information and communicate. Mailing
lists have been a part of the Internet since its founding days and have
proven themselves as one of the best ways to communicate.
The process is pretty simple. A mailing list must be hosted by a specific site
on the Internet. In this case, Fat City would host your mailing list for you
using our servers. The mailing list server is responsible for receiving a message
from a user and then resending it to all other subscribers to the list.
How does it work?
You choose the name of the mailing list, and we create the infrastructure for it.
Once the list is active, your subscribers can sign up either using a web form that
you create on your site, or a generic web form on our site, or directly via E-mail
with the list server software. Subscribers post their message to the list by sending
an E-mail message to the list address. Once that message is received by our server,
it is resent to every other subscriber in the mailing list. Subscribers can remove
themselves from the list at any time.
Basically, that is the main role of list hosting. There are many other aspects of
this service, however. Lists have welcome messages, goodbye messages, security
settings, headers, footers, archives, biography archives, web gateways, search
facilities, subscriber list facilities and more. All of these features are provided
by Fat City for each and every mailing list. You can customize your list in any way
you want; we provide the tools and means for you to do so. We also take care of the
load of resending messages, which can be considerable.
Getting Started
To get started with hosting a list at Fat City, you should review our service agreement
and make sure you can comply with it. At the heart, that means that your list can not
be used for spam and must be an opt-in mailing list. Then you need to decide on a name
for your mailing list. Once you have a name, you can contact us and have the list
created. Note that there is a 10-day free trial on every list, so you are under no
obligation to keep the list if it doesn't meet your needs.
Typical turn-around time for list is about 24 hours if all necessary information is
available to us. If you need a list more urgently that that, let us know and we'll
see what we can do. Once the list is created, you can begin using it immediately.
