Opt-in versus Opt-out and Spam

Spam, by definition, is any unsolicited E-mail message. "Get Rich Quick" schemes, chain letters, unwelcome product offers, invitations to adult sites and hate mail are all examples of spam.

Spam is the bane of the Internet and causes millions of users frustration, annoyance and anger. We at Fat City absolutely do not tolerate spam in any form. All of the mailing lists that we host have been verified to be spam-free, and new customers must agree to our Acceptable Use Policy as part of their agreement for list hosting services.

Opt-in mailing lists are those where the subscribers to the mailing list have requested to receive the materials sent out to the mailing list. For example, if you want us to host a mailing list for you to send out a newsletter to your company's customers, and your customers fill out a form requesting your E-mail newsletter, then your list is considered to be opt-in.

We recommend that our customers use a mechanism called "double opt-in" for their lists.

For example, if you sent out your newsletter to your customers by blindly mailing it to everyone in your customer database, then it no longer qualifies as opt-in because those customers did not specifically request to receive that newsletter. It then becomes an opt-out mailing list and will not be allowed at Fat City.

Opt-out mailing lists would also include any list where you automatically subscribe someone to your list without their knowledge, or where you buy a list of addresses and send E-mail to those addresses, among other examples. As you can see, an opt-out mailing list is essentially spam. We will not allow any mailing lists hosted at Fat City to send out spam.

In addition, Fat City will never sell our customer's address lists, nor do we provide lists of other E-mail addresses which you can buy. We will not tell you where you can buy such lists, nor will we aid or otherwise help anyone who is interested in such.

If you are interested in having us host your mailing list, you might want to review our Acceptable Use Policy and Terms and Conditions agreements.

Fat City Network Services is proud to be a member of CAUCE, the Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial E-mail, and will report all abuses of our system. We are quite serious about stopping spam and aiding others in the fight against spam. Listed below are some useful anti-spam resources:
