Thu, 29-May-2003 at 10:30 PST (updated 30-May-2003, 11:50 AM PST)
THIS SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN POSTPONED.
ALL services may be interrupted in the early morning of 31-May-2003 from
12:00 AM PST and 06:00 AM PST due to scheduled maintenance work further upstream
from us. We may also take advantage of this period to do our own maintenance tasks
to increase redundancy and enhance network performance. Expect that you may experience
connectivity problems or mailing list outages during this time period. Thank you.
Wed, 14-May-2003 at 09:15 PST
Our backbone connection has been restored and all services are up at this time.
We apologize for the length of the downtime. In case you're curious,
this nightmare was the cause of the downtime. Thank you.
Wed, 14-May-2003 at 03:30 PST
Our backbone connection has been been severed by a construction accident to
the west of our location. No ETA for when service will be restored. We apologize
for any inconvience this may cause our customers. Thank you.
Sat, 23-Nov-2002 at 18:00 PDT
The changes to our domain name record should have propagated around the net by now,
so we're removing this service alert. If anyone has continuing problems, please contact
us directly for assistance. Thank you.
Fri, 22-Nov-2002 at 18:00 PDT
Just a reminder that your individual ISP may pick up domain name record changes at a
different frequency than everyone else, so if you are having problems contacting us, it
may be because your ISP hasn't picked up the changes yet. There is nothing we at Fat City
can do to speed this up. If you sent mail to Fat City on Thursday, it should have reached
the mailing list you sent it to. If not, you might consider resending it.
Fri, 22-Nov-2002 at 06:00 PDT
Mailing list service is back up as of about midnight Thursday. An MX record change was made
to support the secondary mail server last night, and that change is trickling through the
Internet as we speak. Depending on how quickly your ISP picks up the changes, you should
notice connectivity improve. Until your ISP picks up the change, mailing list traffic might
be delayed at your site. No mailing list traffic should be lost, although it may be a few
hours before it appears if your ISP hasn't picked up the MX record changes. Thanks for
continuing to be patient through this change.

Our primary mail server is down as a result of a hardware failure. We are working to bring
everything back to service on our secondary mail server. Mailing lists will be affected by
this work, although hosted domains and user accounts will NOT be affected. We expect partial
service to resume by midnight. Updates will be posted here as needed. We apologize to our
mailing list customers and ask for patience while this work continues. Thank you.

The network merge by Allegience took longer than expected, however it is now complete
and all mailing list traffic should resume shortly. Thank you for your patience.
Thu, 09-Aug-2002 at 21:00 PST
Allegience Telecom has a scheduled downtime from 11:59 PM EST 09-Aug-2002 until 08:00 AM EST 10-Aug-2002
to switch the IBI network (a new acquisition of theirs) into the Allegience network. During
this time, switched routing of packets will cause E-mail traffic and mailing list traffic to be shutdown at Fat City. We are
cannot forsee any problems and expect to be back in communication by 05:00 AM PST, but
we can make no promises. Website and database customers will NOT be affected by this
downtime. Only dedicated mailing list traffic will be affected.
We apologize for any inconvenience and will keep this page updated as new information
becomes available.
Thu, 13-Jun-2002 at 15:11 PDT
The network problems experienced by our customers should be resolved and all sites should now
be available. We apologize for the inconvenience this outage caused our customers.
Thu, 13-Jun-2002 at 09:53 PDT
Our upstream provider (www.allegiancetelecom.com) has notified us
that their entire nationwide network has unspecified problems which may cause intermittant to
possible constant downtime. As a result, our customers will likewise be affected. They have not
yet announced an ETA for the restoration of the network, but it is being worked on. ssh logins
are not affected.
Thu, 06-Dec-2001 at 11:20 PDT
Issues with routing, connectivity and backlogged mail have been resolved.
Thu, 06-Dec-2001 at 00:17 PDT
Our upstream provider (www.allegiancetelecom.com) has notified us
that a routing problem exists between two subnets (one of which we use). Connectivity should be
restored within a few hours.
UPDATE: As of 10:30 am, the incoming routing problem is resolved, but an outgoing routing
problem still exists. This may impact outgoing E-mail from our servers, or it may cause
the mail to be delivered slowly. We will update you as we hear more.
Fri, 21-Sep-2001 at 20:55 PDT
Our upstream provider (www.hosting.com) has notified us that the
defective router has been replaced and all
services are back to normal. Service alert canceled.
Fri, 21-Sep-2001 at 14:20 PDT
Our upstream provider (www.hosting.com) has notified us
one of their primary routers has failed and all colocation facilities will be
affected while it is replaced. Fat City will be unavailable during this replacement.
Expected downtime is 30 minutes.
Updated: Sat, 08-Sep-2001 at 11:00 PDT
All services are functional at this time. Service alert canceled.
Updated: Fri, 07-Sep-2001 at 19:26 PDT
The fatcity.com servers have been successfully moved into the new facilities and
appear to be working correctly. No known issues exist at this time. The Service
Alert for the E-mail connectivity problems will be canceled at 08:00 on Sat, 08-Sep-2001.
Updated: Fri, 07-Sep-2001 at 07:30 PDT
Most users who were experiencing problems reaching fatcity.com yesterday have
reported successful connections. We will continue to monitor the situation.
We are expecting some downtime tonight or tomorrow (Sat, 08-Sep) to move our
servers into a temporary facility. All services (web, list, E-mail, ftp) will
be affected and will be unavailable during this time. We expect the downtime
to last anywhere between one hour and four hours. We will post a more precise
timeframe once we know the details.
Updated: Thu, 06-Sep-2001 at 14:21 PDT
If you are experiencing problems reaching fatcity.com via E-mail, you may have to wait
for a number of hours to retry your message.
On Wednesday, 05-Sep-2001, at approximately 19:00, changes were made to the MX records for
delivery of mail to fatcity.com. These changes were made incorrectly by the authority and
ended up pointing to a non-existent location. The changes propagated to the rest of the
Internet via the normal DNS refresh mechanism during the night.
Thursday morning we received notice that delivery of mail to fatcity.com from those
domains which had already received the updated DNS data were failing. We have fixed the
offending DNS records, but the changes must still propagate to the rest of the Internet.
Depending on how frequently your service provider (ISP) refreshes their domain records, this
change could take anywhere between 3 hours and 24 hours. Most sites have either a 12 hour
refresh or a 24 hour refresh. For some international sites
which update their records less frequently, a longer outage could be in effect.
As this change affected only the delivery of E-mail, you should still be able to
connect to our website. You may catch up on list traffic and/or post a message to
the lists using our ListGuru web access facilities during this interruption. The posting option will be
made available to the public for the duration of this interruption.
You may sign in to the ListGuru web access pages by clicking here. Simply select
the mailing list you want to post to from the "My Lists" page and then choose the
"Post a message" link from that page.
If you have any further problems or questions, contact Bruce Bergman.
